Foot Pain Q & A

Why do I have foot pain?

You have over two dozen bones in each of your feet and ankles in addition to all of those tendons, ligaments, and muscles that bind everything together. When you have foot pain, it can stem from injury to any of these components or a combination of them. Some of the most common causes of foot pain include:

  • Heel spurs
  • Neuropathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Arthritis and gout
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Sprains and strains
  • Bunions or hammertoes
  • Stress fractures or broken bones

If left untreated, chronic foot pain can have an impact on the way you stand and walk (your gait). This can lead to secondary issues like knee, hip, and even lower back pain.

When should I see a doctor for foot pain?

Because your feet carry you from task to task and support your entire body weight, you need to schedule an exam at Northeast Foot Care as soon as your foot pain begins. It’s especially important to have a foot pain evaluation if you experience:

  • Limited range of motion
  • Deformities or bony bumps
  • Swelling, inflammation, or bruising
  • Inability to bear weight on the foot

At Northeast Foot Care, you can get in-office X-ray and ultrasound images, so Dr. Lambarski can often diagnose you on the spot and get you started on foot pain treatment quickly.

What is the treatment for foot pain?

In many cases, treating foot pain begins with immobilizing the area. This can involve wearing a brace, cast, or splint to promote tissue healing. Depending on your foot pain diagnosis and the severity of your symptoms, your treatment plan from Dr. Lambarski may also include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT)
  • Padding, strapping, and taping
  • Prescription medications
  • Cortisone injections
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
  • Custom orthotics
  • Physical therapy

Other common treatments for foot pain include:

Dr. Lambarski has developed an innovative treatment called CryoCare. This FDA-approved treatment aims to freeze away foot pain by applying a cryoprobe to your exact area of pain. The cryoprobe freezes your pain at a controlled temperature while Dr. Lambarski guides it through ultrasound imaging.

MLS laser therapy

MLS stands for Multiwave Lock System, a type of laser therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light to heal soft tissue injuries. MLS laser therapy has an anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues in your feet to accelerate healing and repair damage.

Nerve cryoablation

Nerve cryoablation specifically treats nerve pain. The treatment uses ultrasound imaging guidance to freeze the exact nerves that are causing you pain.
